As a child, they won't be able to succeed at school, as a young adult they will be locked out of the job market, and as a parent they won't be able to support their own child's learning. This intergenerational cycle makes social mobility and a fairer society more difficult.
A third of UK children do not see themselves reflected in books, with an even worse picture among poorer and minority ethnic readers. According to new research, a child’s socioeconomic circumstances affect their ability to see themselves in books, with 37.3% of children receiving free school meals saying they did not recognise themselves in what they read.
A boy born in Stockton Town Centre (which has some of the most serious literacy challenges in the country) has a life expectancy 26.1 years shorter than a boy born in North Oxford (which has some of the fewest literacy challenges)
A girl born in Queensgate, Burnley (which has some of the most serious literacy challenges in the country), has a life expectancy 20.9 years shorter than a girl born in Mayfield, Wealdon (which has some of the fewest literacy challenges)

Right now, our efforts revolve around helping children have regular access to literature. We are conscious of the need for books in other spaces in our society and hope to fulfill those needs soon.
Our research team looks for schools in low-income areas with high rates of drop-out students, low literacy levels and low transition into higher education. We then contact the school and find out what support they need and how we can help.
